About the Book

Using Art Effectively with the Most Visual Approach to A&P Visual Anatomy & Physiology combines a one-of-a-kind visual approach with a modular organisation that uniquely meets the needs of today's students - without sacrificing the comprehensive coverage of A&P topics required for careers in nursing and other allied health professions. The 3rd Edition presents key new features based on recent research about how students use and digest visual information. New modules in the first chapter emphasise how to use art effectively when studying; new Integrated Figure Questions increases the likelihood that students will spend time viewing the art and prompts them to consider what they have just learned; and new SmartArt Videos, accessible via QR code in the book, help students navigate key, complex pieces of art on some of the toughest topics. Samples Download the detailed table of contents Preview sample pages from Visual Anatomy & Physiology, Global Edition Features Integrated Figure Questions encourage students to answer thought-provoking questions as part of viewing the figure and increases the likelihood that students will spend time viewing the art. The Visual Approach breaks out of the narrative-first model of other two-semester A&P books. Instead of long columns of text that refer to visuals, this book integrates visuals with the text. Students can't read without seeing the corresponding visual, and they can't look at a visual without reading. This book has true text-art integration, which encourages reading and enhances understanding. The Modular Organisation presents each chapter in self-contained, two-page spreads. The top left page begins with the module number and module title, the bottom right page ends with the learning outcome for each module, and the text-art presentation with integrated self-check questions constitutes the rest of the spread. These two-page spreads give students a predictable learning path and an efficient organisation method for managing their time. Everything they need is contained within these spreads, which means no flipping pages to find relevant figures. Within each chapter, related modules are organised into sections that conclude with a Section Review. Clinical Modules throughout the book help students connect what they learn in class to the real world, with scenarios they may encounter in their future career. Chapter-opening Learning Outcomes are based on the Learning Outcomes recommended by the HAPS organisation and are repeated at the end of each two-page module to drive home the connection between the Learning Outcomes and the associated teaching points. Full-sentence module titles state the core fact or concept that is presented in the module. These correlate by number to the Learning Outcomes on the chapter-opening page and at the end of each module, thus making it easy for students to 'see,' navigate through, and learn the chapter content. Chapter Integration sections ask students to aggregate what they have learned so far in the context of real-world situations. These scenarios are presented in a friendly, story format followed by critical thinking questions. End-of-Chapter study and practice material includes a narrative Study Outline and comprehensive Chapter Review Questions (labeling, matching, true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer) to help students learn and integrate the chapter content. New to this edition A new emphasis on using art more effectively informs multiple changes to layout and figure organization, as well as a new system of integrated figure prompts and questions, helping ensure that students view and navigate the art more efficiently and effectively to enhance learning. Modules 1.1 - 1.5 introduce students to the importance of studying the art in the book and then guides them through how to study the figures in the text. Everyday Physiology features are sprinkled throughout the text to help students see connections to real-life applications. Learning Outcomes Correlation booklet matches the Learning Outcomes in the textbook to the recommended HAPS Learning Outcomes. Instructors can use this reference tool to quickly see where a given topic is covered, and to what degree. About the Author :
Frederic (Ric) H. Martini, Ph.D. Dr. Martini received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in comparative and functional anatomy for work on the pathophysiology of stress. In addition to professional publications that include journal articles and contributed chapters, technical reports, and magazine articles, he is the lead author of ten undergraduate texts on anatomy and physiology or anatomy. Dr. Martini is currently affiliated with the University of Hawaii at Manoa and has a long-standing bond with the Shoals Marine Laboratory, a joint venture between Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire. He has been active in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) for over 24 years and was a member of the committee that established the course curriculum guidelines for A&P. He is now a President Emeritus of HAPS after serving as President-Elect, President, and Past-President over 2005-2007. Dr. Martini is also a member of the American Physiological Society, the American Association of Anatomists, the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology, the Australia/New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Hawaii Academy of Science, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the International Society of Vertebrate Morphologists. Judi L. Nath, Ph.D. Dr. Judi Nath is a biology professor and the writer-in-residence at Lourdes University, where she teaches at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Primary courses include anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and science writing. She received her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Bowling Green State University, which included study abroad at the University of Salzburg in Austria.  Her doctoral work focused on autoimmunity, and she completed her Ph.D. from the University of Toledo. Dr. Nath is devoted to her students and strives to convey the intricacies of science in captivating ways that are meaningful, interactive, and exciting. She has won the Faculty Excellence Award - an accolade recognising effective teaching, scholarship, and community service - multiple times and in 2013 was named as an Ohio Memorable Educator.  She is active in many professional organisations, notably the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), where she has served several terms on the board of directors. Dr. Nath is a coauthor of Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Visual Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Human Anatomy (published by Pearson), and she is the sole author of Using Medical Terminology and Stedman's Medical Terminology (published by Wolters Kluwer). Her favourite charities are those that have significantly affected her life, including the local Humane Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and the ALS Association. In 2015, she and her husband established the Nath Science Scholarship at Lourdes University to assist students pursuing science-based careers. When not working, days are filled with family life, bicycling, and hanging with the dogs. Edwin F. Bartholomew, M.S. Edwin F. Bartholomew received his undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio and his M.S. from the University of Hawaii. Mr. Bartholomew has taught human anatomy and physiology at both the secondary and undergraduate levels and a wide variety of other science courses (from botany to zoology) at Maui Community College (now the University of Hawaii Maui College) and at historic Lahainaluna High School, the oldest high school west of the Rockies. He is a coauthor of Fundamentals of Anatomy & Physiology, Visual Anatomy & Physiology, Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, Visual Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, Structure and Function of the Human Body, and The Human Body in Health and Disease (all published by Pearson). Mr. Bartholomew is a member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the National Association of Biology Teachers, the National Science Teachers Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Kevin Petti, PhD Dr. Petti is a professor at San Diego Miramar College, and teaches courses in human anatomy and physiology, human dissection, and health education. He is President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) and holds a doctorate from the University of San Diego. As a dual U.S./Italian citizen he also teaches courses in Italy that focus on the genesis of anatomy as a science and its influence on the Renaissance masters, a story unique to the Italian peninsula. His students range from anatomy professors pursuing continuing education, to undergraduates in study abroad programs. Dr. Petti is often invited to speak about the connection between art and anatomy in medieval and Renaissance Italy at museums, conferences and universities. The Italian government invited him to speak at their Cultural Institutes in Los Angeles and New York City, and the University of Palermo in Sicily included him in a seminar series celebrating its 210th anniversary.
