About the Book

Introductory Statistics Using SPSS, by Herschel Knapp, shows readers how to properly select, process, and interpret statistics without heavy emphasis on theory, formula derivations, or abstract mathematical concepts. Each chapter is structured to answer questions that readers most want answered, including: how to choose the appropriate test for each situation, how to set up the data, how to run the test, and how to interpret and document the results. Requiring no hand calculations, this highly applied book helps readers get the story from their data. They learn by doing, completing practice exercises at the end of each chapter. Video tutorials on the accompanying website clearly demonstratehow to set up the data and run the test in SPSS. Contents: PART I: STATISTICAL PRINCIPLES 1) Research Principles 2) Sampling 3) Working in SPSS; PART II: STATISTICAL PROCESSES 4) Descriptive Statistics 5) T Test 6) ANOVA 7) Paired T Test 8) Correlation and Regression 9) Chi-Square; PART III: DATA HANDLING 10) Supplemental SPSS Operations; PART IV SOLUTIONS TO ODD-NUMBERED EXERCISES"

Review :
I think that this is a very useful, and more appropriately a very user-friendly way of presenting statistics to folks that are not particularly interested in learning every nuance of statistics. Ellen P. McCann George Mason University It follows closely the approach I take to teaching statistics: half the time spent in the classroom teaching concepts and half time in the computer lab applying those concepts to the statistical analysis of a dataset using SPSS. Since our students have only one semester to learn statistics at the undergraduate level, I place less emphasis on formulae and more on applying the concepts and interpreting output. Holly Johnson University of Ottawa A textbook like this is exactly what we need. Our class focuses on the application of statistics concepts/procedures using SPSS. Dazhi Yang Boise State University For me, the most impressive aspect of the text is the accompanying features. In particular, the online tutorials are great. They are potentially useful inside and outside of the classroom. I believe that if students simply know that they have a website to go to for assistance, much of the apprehension that goes along with learning a new data analysis program will be eradicated. Matthew Costello University of Nebraska Lincoln This textbook is comprehensive in helping students grasps the importance of understanding how to conduct the appropriate statistical tests with different variables (continuous or categorical), levels of measurement, and nature of data (normal vs. skewed) using SPSS. Each chapter has numerous practice questions for students to hone their practice skills using SPSS. The audio visual links are added bonus to this book as students can return to the recorded information on conducting certain statistical analyses.
