About the Book

Tissue engineering thrives on collaboration across traditional disciplines, combining polymer science and drug delivery with cell biology, immunology and surgery. A wealth of knowledge has been gained from both the materials science and the cell and molecular biology communities in the development of new or modified bio-materials for implantation. Although there exists a greater foundation today for the development of new implantable materials for tissue engineered devices, there still remains a significant amount to learn. The articles included in this book highlight the important advances in polymer science that impact tissue engineering. The breadth of polymer science is well represented with the relevance of both polymer chemistry and morphology emphasized in terms of cell and tissue response. This book contains contributions from leaders in the field that are representative of current research endeavors and should serve to stimulate further work to move the approaches of tissue engineering with biomedical polymers closer to widespread clinical impact.
