In the streaming era—and with streaming made nearly ubiquitous during COVID-19—almost every aspect of our day is mediated by these bright surfaces. Phillip Maciak is the TV editor for the Los Angeles Review of Books and a lecturer in English and American Culture Studies at Washington University in St. Louis. He's the author of The Disappearing Christ: Secularism in the Silent Era (Columbia University Press, 2019), and his writing has appeared in Slate, The New Republic, and The Week, among other places.
