About the Book

She is thankful for dreams. The many friends she meets their return nightly. Now, after so many years, she recognizes most characters, while a few strangers wander in and out. She has dreamed of being a bird, a squirrel, an old man, a horse and many times, a rock. From wakefulness, the poet takes what she finds to use in dream, and vice versa. She travels on foot, by cab, train, bus. Or hitchhikes, which she has found to be dangerous. But she has learned many tricks on how to beat someone at their own game. She maneuvers throughout the universe of dream and wakefulness so easily that she could disappear if you do not keep your eye on her. There are many people recognizable as having aged along with the poet. Others are desperate to be free from dream, coming willingly to the here-and-now. And there are those few who are reluctant to even show themselves in either dream or wakefulness, lingering in shadowy corners. What they do there is a poem in itself. But all their lives have become enmeshed into a single world. One which is distinguishable by loneliness, regret, lost love, death, manic joyousness, despair and loss. Whether sad or uplifting, whether acute or benign observation of, and from, those characters in dream, the poet is grateful for each touch and every vision. One might get lost between the here-and-now and dreamland. But does it matter? Dream and wakefulness just might exist on a single plane, with ones moving throughout one, then the other, as is wont. Or needed, or according to some whim of a law of nature, as yet undiscovered.
