About the Book

Finally, your students will write without dread! Have your students almost given up on writing? Do they reach for the tissue box when you say, "Write an essay"? Do you worry they won't be ready for high school or college writing? Do they say they think of things to write but can't write them down? With THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL, they'll learn essay writing in a relaxed, nonthreatening atmosphere with a little humor thrown in. BREAKING NEWS: The SAT essay is changing! If your teen is planning on taking the SAT after January 2016, skip the SAT essay chapter in this edition of The Power in Your Hands. More info here: http: //writingwithsharonwatson.com/the-sat-essay-what-you-need-to-know-about-it/. Your teens will learn what they need to know for high school and will be prepared for college writing. First, they'll learn and practice persuasive essays. Next, they'll navigate a comparison-and-contrast essay, a biography, a literary analysis, a research paper with MLA documentation, and much, much more. In addition, students will master description and narration essays. Students' assignments depend on their writing level: beginner, intermediate, or advanced. Written by the same author who wrote JUMP IN, Apologia Educational Ministries' popular middle school writing curriculum, this course is the natural next step for those who value college-preparatory material presented in incremental steps with a conversational tone. Sharon Watson has the knack of teaching students with no prior writing experience in the same class with advanced writers. She knows when to introduce new material and how to keep it interesting. Both reluctant and eager writers will benefit from the way she reveals exactly how the "magic trick" of writing is done! With over 100 daily lessons and complete instructions for 22 essays and reports, this is an engaging course students will enjoy--or not dread. And, more good news: the course almost teaches itself. Really. Because writers come in all varieties, this course begins with basic writing skills so that inexperienced writers can catch up quickly on fundamentals, and then it smoothly merges them with their age-mates. More advanced writers will enjoy the Digging Deeper lessons designed specifically for them. No matter their writing level or their attitude toward writing, students will learn essay structures, vital writing tools, proofreading skills, and a confidence that comes from success. Perfect for homeschools, co-ops, and private schools. Contains some Christian-based material. Don't let another year slide by without a solid writing curriculum! Engage your students with this intriguing course filled with examples from real students and professional writers. Prerequisites: None. Grammar not included. Christian content: Some. Recommended as a companion volume: THE POWER IN YOUR HANDS: WRITING NONFICTION IN HIGH SCHOOL, TEACHER'S GUIDE, 2nd EDITION. This teacher's guide includes all assignments and checklists, answers to chapter work, a year of engaging writing prompts, and a grading grids for every essay assignment!

About the Author :
Sharon Watson is the author of WRITING FICTION [IN HIGH SCHOOL] and Apologia Educational Ministries' JUMP IN, a popular writing curriculum for middle school students. She began her writing life with snappy one-liners, notably, "I Hate Math!!!" gouged into the top of her fifth-grade math homework. In a junior high English class, she read The Scarlet Letter but could not figure out what Hester's "A" stood for. This has given her empathy for students stumbling through school and trying to make sense of their writing and literature classes, and she loves finding ways to make difficult writing tasks and concepts accessible to students. Sharon homeschooled her children for 18 years and teaches high school composition, fiction writing, and literature to local homeschool students and in all-day workshops. She and her husband live near Indianapolis, Indiana, and have three grown children and two grandchildren. Visit her website featuring FAQs for students and teachers, along with weekly writing prompts for high school and middle school students, at www.WritingWithSharonWatson.com.
