About the Book

This text offers 6th - 12th grade educators guided instructional approaches for including young adult (YA) literature in the social sciences and humanities classroom in order to promote literacy development while learning content. Chapters are co-authored, pairing content experts with literacy experts, to ensure that both content and literacy standards are met in each approach. Each chapter spotlights the reading of one YA novel, and offer pre-, during-, and after reading activities that guide students to a deeper understanding of the content while increasing their literacy practices. While each chapter focuses on a specific content topic, readers will discover the many opportunities reading YA literature in the content area has in encouraging cross-disciplinary study.

Review :
A wonderful exploration of the vital ways adolescent literature can open hearts and truly engage minds with the historical realities of our world. This is an important addition to every teacher’s professional library! Adolescent Literature as a Complement to the Content Areas speaks to what education could be when allowed to follow its natural course. Using YA literature brings imagination into the arenas of social studies and the humanities, and I am in good company with Albert Einstein who told us over and over that true brilliance cannot be achieved without robust imagination. This volume contains highly practical methods that combine meaningful social studies material and relevance to literacy standards. The range of topics included is imaginative and would find good use in a number of different social studies courses.
