About the Book

At-Risk Students: Transforming Student Behavior details the warning signs of disturbing behaviors, which are often overlooked by educators and/or misdiagnosed by mental health professionals. Educators will be provided with the tools to: expeditiously identify at-risk characteristics; incorporate policies that support and monitor their achievement; implement research-based strategies designed to create a positive school culture that promotes teaching and learning.

At-risk Students was written for district and school administrators, department heads, teachers, individuals employed in a traditional public or charter school system, staff in an alternative school working with at-risk students, as well as anyone looking to incorporate a comprehensive behavior system into their strategic school improvement plans as a response to intervention. At-risk Students is a must-read supplement for graduate students seeking a degree in educational administration.

Charisse Beach is currently an Assistant Principal for Joliet Public Schools and a certified presenter for the Illinois State Board of Education, providing professional development for school administrators and other stakeholders on how to educate and transform lives of youth demonstrating at-risk behaviors.

Review :
This is a requisite resource for educators and administrators who aspire to effect significant change in interventions designed for at-risk students. In At-Risk Students: Transforming Student Behavior,Ms. Beach presents the brutal facts about the limited understanding and resources available to help the majority of students at risk. Her compellingaccount of her own son’s high-risk behaviors further propels the urgency for schools to look at their current policies and implement the critical reforms needed for schools to be safe and students to become successful. This book speaks from intellect and spirit simultaneously. Through her personal journey as the mother of an at-risk youth, Ms. Beach has captured the heart-wrenching challenges that educators of at-risk students are confronted with daily, and the impact and demands these challenges force upon the family, school, and community. Her unprecedented love, courage, and wisdom drive the spirit of this invaluable contribution to the future of education and the future of all learners. At-Risk Students: Transforming Student Behavior challenges every school leader to recognize that one size does not fit all when working with at-risk students. It makes us take a hard look at what works and what doesn't, allowing us to explore and develop plans to best help at-risk students succeed.
