Review :
'An holistic view of management from the East may not yet be the central theme of the dominant management theories, but it is a powerful counterpoint to the common assumptions. The analytical frame of this interesting volume creates a sense that humanising of organisations needs to be not only within the ordinary awareness but also within the competence of managers around the world. Though the book is based primarily on research within an Indian context, relevance of the exposed Functional paradigm remains undoubtedly global.' Samir Ranjan Chatterjee, Emeritus Professor, Curtin University, Australia 'Research in all areas of life has vastly improved our understanding of societal and behavioural processes but application of this knowledge to promote peace and harmony in macro or micro systems remains greatly unfulfilled. Some events and experiments are often reported. This book is one such contribution. G.P. Rao has evolved a methodology to identify suitable values from the ethos and wisdom of people within the organisation leading to what he calls a Functionally Humane Organisation. The book discusses data from abroad to show how an inter-country value-base can be developed.' Ishwar Dayal, Former Director, Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, India 'Values are important and increasingly so. Professor Rao's work has contributed to our understanding that we are adhering to the same or similar values, and at the same time identifies the place typical values. We need to know that some values are place typical and accept this fact. This book can help us to orientate in the landscape of synergetic, deviating and even discordant values.' Bengt Gustavsson, Stockholm Business School, Sweden
