Thomas Mann war ein deutscher Schriftsteller, der unter der nationalsozialistischen Herrschaft emigrierte und 1936 die tschechoslowakische Staatsburgerschaft annahm, worauf ihm die deutsche Staatsburgerschaft entzogen wurde. 1943 wurde er US-amerikanischer Staatsburger. Er zahlt zu den bedeutendsten Erzahlern deutscher Sprache im 20. Jahrhundert. Fur seinen ersten Roman Buddenbrooks (1900, erschienen 1901) erhielt er 1929 den Nobelpreis fur Literatur.
