About the Book

A California college English and ESL instructor, Catherine Coleman, called Mrs. C by her students, provides practical lessons for ESL students so they can better communicate with their college classmates. Using specific strategies and personal stories based on education and experience, Mrs. C gives concrete methods to increase communication. There are lessons on verbal and non-verbal communication as well as a lesson on general strategy. A lesson with student questions and instructor answers touches on many concerns of the modern student. Moreover, throughout the guide, specific academic vocabulary is identified and an opportunity to test students' understanding of the vocabulary and content is provided at the end of each lesson. Finally, the answers to the lessons' questions are provided at the end. Just as she does in her college classroom, Mrs. C not only teaches not communicative strategies, but also offers a window into American college culture based on her own academic experiences as well as those of her colleagues and her students. This guide is a must read for any current or future student in American colleges.
