About the Book

This gripping personal account (not a typical memoir) written in the Bildungsroman tradition. It is set in a two year period that enables us to witness the growing up or "coming of age" of Hodge, a sensitive Newfoundlander who goes in search of answers to life's questions with the expectation that these will result from gaining experience of the world. The genre evolved from folklore tales of a dunce or youngest son going out in the world to seek his fortune or reaffirm his identity. Clearly in this story, Hodge is affected by an early emotional loss which makes her leave on a journey to Botswana Africa. The backdrop is a period of major disruption both for the collective Newfoundland identity and society with the pending loss of the fisheries. In a Bildungsroman tradition, the goal is maturity, and she achieves it gradually and with difficulty. This story features a main conflict between Hodge and society. As typically, with the genre, the values of society are gradually accepted by the Hodge and she is ultimately accepted, and her mistakes and disappointments are over. From this period (her time teaching in rural Africa, 1990 -1992), Hodge is able to reach out and help others after having achieved maturity and goes on to great achievements in running and working at the United Nations.
