About the Book

Cognitive networks can be crucial for the evolution of future communication systems; however, current trends have indicated major movement in other relevant fields towards the integration of different techniques for the realization of self-aware and self-adaptive communication systems. Evolution of Cognitive Networks and Self-Adaptive Communication Systems overviews innovative technologies combined for the formation of self-aware, self-adaptive, and self-organizing networks. By aiming to inform the research community and the related industry of solutions for cognitive networks, this book is essential for researchers, instructors, and professionals interested in clarifying the latest trends resulting in a unified realization for cognitive networking and communication systems.

About the Author :
Thomas Lagkas received the B.S. degree (with honors) in computer science from the Department of Informatics, Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece. He received the PhD degree on “Wireless Communication Networks” from the same department, in 2006. During his PhD studies, he was awarded a PhD candidates’ scholarship by the Research Committee of the Aristotle University. He has been an adjunct Lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece, since 2007. He has been a Laboratory Associate at the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, since 2004, and a Scientific Associate, since 2008. He has been awarded a postdoctoral research scholarship by the State Scholarship Foundation. His interests are in the areas of wireless communication networks, medium access control, QoS provision and mobile multimedia communications with relevant publications at a number of widely recognized international scientific journals and conferences. Panagiotis G. Sarigiannidis received the B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Thessaloniki, Greece, in 2001 and 2007, respectively. He is currently a Lecturer with the University of Western Macedonia, Kozani, Greece. His research interests include medium access protocols in optical networks, dynamic bandwidth allocation schemes in passive optical networks, scheduling policies in IEEE 802.16 wireless networks, wireless push systems design and optimization, quality of service provisioning in optical and wireless networks, traffic estimation and prediction via numerical analysis, and design of burst allocation for optical burst switching networks. He has published over 40 papers in international journals, conferences, and book chapters. Dr. Malamati Louta is Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece. She holds M.Eng. (1997) and Ph.D. (2000) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (N.T.U.A) and M.B.A. degree from the N.T.U.A., the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens and the University of Piraeus. From 1999 to 2005, she was a member of the staff of Public Power Corporation, working as a senior engineer, as a member of the team that developed the telecommunications section of PPC S.A. and as Information System Security Sub-Sector Manager. From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Louta was Assistant Professor at the Department of Business Administration, Technological Educational Institute of Western Macedonia, Greece and additionally was Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering, University of Western Macedonia, Greece. From 2008 to 2010, she was Lecturer at the Department of Informatics and Telematics of Harokopio University of Athens. Her research interests include the design and performance evaluation of communication networks, autonomic / cognitive networking, ad-hoc wireless networking, telecommunications service and software engineering, algorithms and complexity theory. She is the author of over 65 peer-reviewed publications in these areas. Dr Louta has been actively involved in a number of research and development projects of the E.U.. She serves as a member of the editorial board of three international journals, as a technical program committee member and as a reviewer in a number of international conferences and journals. She is a member of the IEEE, the ACM and the Technical Chamber of Greece, and served as a member of the committee of National, European Programs and Innovation at the Department of Western Macedonia of the Technical Chamber of Greece.
