About the Book

In the real world, most signals are analog, spanning continuously varying values. Circuits that interface with the physical environment need to be able to process these signals. Principles of Analog Electronics introduces the fascinating world of analog electronics, where fields, circuits, signals and systems, and semiconductors meet. Drawing on the author’s teaching experience, this richly illustrated, full-color textbook expertly blends theory with practical examples to give a clear understanding of how real electronic circuits work. Build from the Essentials of Math, Physics, and Chemistry to Electronic Components, Circuits, and Applications Building a solid foundation, the book first explains the mathematics, physics, and chemistry that are essential for grasping the principles behind the operation of electronic devices. It then examines the theory of circuits through models and important theorems. The book describes and analyzes passive and active electronic devices, focusing on fundamental filters and common silicon-based components, including diodes, bipolar junction transistors, and metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs). It also shows how semiconductor devices are used to design electronic circuits such as rectifiers, power suppliers, clamper and clipper circuits, and amplifiers. A chapter explores actual applications, from audio amplifiers and FM radios to battery chargers. Delve Deeper into Analog Electronics through Curiosities, Key Personalities, and Practical Examples Each chapter includes helpful summaries with key points, jargon, and terms, as well as exercises to test your knowledge. Practical tables illustrate the coding schemes to help identify commercial passive and active components. Throughout, sidebars highlight "curiosities," interesting observations, and examples that make the subject more concrete. This textbook offers a truly comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of analog electronics, including essential background concepts. Taking a fresh approach, it connects electronics to its importance in daily life, from music to medicine and more.

Review :
"... a well-written introductory book to analog electronics. It has the potential to become a very useful tool to undergraduates and beginners in the field. The book is self-contained; it provides a good exposition into the principles of analog electronics and enters into detail whenever appropriate. The interest of the reader is stimulated with numerous curiosities and observations that render the text enjoyable and easy to follow." —Fotios Kanellos, School of Production Engineering and Management, Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, from the Journal of Intelligent and Robotic Systems, May 2015 "[Combines] the rigor of an academic textbook with practical information useful for lab practice (see for instance the color coding of resistors), facts and trivia about electronics and science, references to the bios of eminent scientists." —Luca Selmi, DIEGM, University of Udine, Italy "As the title indicates, this book not only contains the principles of analog electronics, but also devotes considerable effort to the fundamental areas that underlie this subject. As such, this book is a quick, effective, and comprehensive learning tool." —J. David Irwin, Auburn University, Alabama, USA "The book provides a comprehensive and self-consistent introduction to the fundamentals of electronics, including an extensive treatment of basic material such as semiconductor physics and circuit theory. Passive and active electronic components are carefully introduced, and used to discuss the basic transistor amplifier configurations used in analog electronics. Self-consistency is a significant added value of the book, in particular for electronics courses to be taught to undergraduate/graduate students enrolled outside the IT engineering area." —Fabrizio Bonani, Politecnico di Torino, Italy "Easy to follow—useful as a textbook for elementary courses in electronic circuits/analog electronics." —Andreas Demosthenous, University College London, UK "... the initial review of the math and physics is very useful. I like all the curiosities and observations, and I have really appreciated the practical approach. ... This book, intended for a first course of electronics, reaches its objectives to be clear and to introduce the students to electronics, taking the reader by the hand along the path of this fascinating world. The arguments are treated with deepness associated with a very clear presentation." —Domenico Caputo, Sapienza – Università di Roma, Italy "A self-contained textbook for a first course in electronics. Practical, real-life application-oriented examples presented in the book are likely to motivate students in the subject. The treatment is comprehensive with a number of solved examples." —L.K. Maheshwari, Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, India "The concept of the book is great for academically oriented readers with a curiosity for historical roots and an open eye for the world around them. As an example, it is fascinating to see how the author moves within roughly a dozen pages from the Greek philosopher Democrito’s hypothesis that all matter is discontinuous (400 BC) to modern quantum physics and electromagnetic radiation, using an amphitheatre analogy along the way to explain the concept of electron shells." —Peter Mathys, University of Colorado Boulder, USA "This book attempts to present the principles of analog electronics in a very lucid form, starting from the fundamental issues to advanced topics. This journey is indeed pleasant, both for the students as well as practicing engineers. The faculties will also benefit in several points while delivering these to the students." ––Soumya Pandit, Institute of Radio Physics and Electronics, University College of Science and Technology, University of Calcutta, India "The reviewed book provides a good foundation of electronics including analog circuits." ––Syed Kamrul Islam, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA "… a useful tool for introducing beginners in the area of electronics. The required background in mathematics and physics is well presented. The basic BJT and MOS amplifier configurations are presented at introductory level which is appropriate for a beginner. The provided material is accompanied by application examples and this facilitates the reader for understanding the practical aspect of electronics." ––Costas Psychalinos, Physics Department, University of Patras, Greece "This is a book with a broad coverage of the basic electronic components used for analog circuit design. The book features background material in mathematics and physics, making it useful for students with a limited background in these fields. Also, it means that the book can be introduced at an early stage in an electrical engineering curriculum. Interesting real-life examples and observations are included throughout the book. Small notes about the pioneers in mathematics, physics and engineering are included, adding a human touch to the technical matters." ––Erik Bruun, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby "This book has covered all basics of electronics and thus I feel adopting this book and flow of syllabus will help students understand the basics very well with the help of single book instead of referring to many related books. And the course is requirement of any graduation studies related to electronics and electrical sciences." —Nagamani A N, PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore, India "... provides a very colorful and insightful introduction into the world of analog electronics. ... What makes this text unique from other texts on analog electronic theory is that the author not only clearly presents the mathematical fundamentals and theories, but also includes a brief history of the people responsible for developing these theories and their contributions, as well as interesting information on a wide variety of topics related to the theory being presented both practical and just for knowledge sake. ... provides the reader with excellent worked-out problem examples to learn from. This book will give the reader, new to electronics, an excellent foundation for understanding and applying analog components. The interesting sidebars and practical information clearly presented makes this is one of the most engaging and interesting texts on analog electronics available today!" —John J. Shea, from IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine, November/December 2015
