About the Book

This story begins with Xavier, XL, as a kid growing up on the Southside of Chicago, living with his mother, Ms. Jean, who is a nurse. She tries to give medical attention to those in her neighborhood that either couldn't afford it or didn't want the attention from the police. XL excels in school as he learns the streets but his education came from the hustlers, gangsters, pimps and hoe's in the hood as well. Living on the Southside of Chicago on Stoney Island requires that most young men grow up very fast if they are to survive. XL did, but with a strong mother to keep him grounded, he didn't go the way of his friends. He learned early how to hustle, pimp, sell drugs and kill, which wasn't difficult at all being that it was in his blood. XL's father, Halal, also known as X, was a hustler and a hit man with great notoriety in Chicago. A man XL had never known personally but who everyone he encountered told him stories about. XL'S father was serving the rest of his life in prison. A man his mother still loved, Ms. Jean did her best to make sure her only child didn't go the way of his father. She was a hard working woman, whose hope it was to see her son make something of himself and not be swallowed up by the streets. XL was doing just that until his Freshman year in college when some Russians tried to kidnap his new friend. His survival instincts botched the kidnapping. He was forced to return home with a Russian mob out to kill him. After returning home, he finds that his life-long friend and brother had been killed. This left XL the responsibilities of taking care of his best friend's sisters and finding his killer. In doing so, XL learns that his friend's killer is connected to the Russians looking for him. XL is drawn into a life that he'd did his best to avoid. He accepts this life with ease because the streets are a part of him and so is his father's nature. In search of his best friend's killer, he finds that Binky's (his friend) death is because of another good friend's actions. After finding the killer, the hunters are drawn closer to XL. After his father is brutally murdered and his loved ones are threatened, XL stops being the hunted and becomes the hunter.
