Review :

"I always recommend this book to graduate students and practicing reading specialists and literacy coaches. The third edition is the best yet, with more attention paid to the multiple leadership roles reading specialists play, their instructional coaching work, and how they can support RTI and CCSS instructional efforts. From larger frameworks to nitty-gritty details, this book continues to be a 'must read' for reading professionals. As a text, it is excellent for use in any graduate-level course addressing the roles and responsibilities of language and literacy professionals."--Jacy Ippolito, EdD, School of Education, Salem State University, Massachusetts

"Bean challenges her readers to strategically lead as they collaboratively design solid literacy programs. Features such as guiding questions, follow-up activities, and vignettes will ensure ease of use in school districts and on university campuses. This essential resource is powerful and inspiring."--Carolyn B. Gwinn, PhD, Literacy Academic Support Specialist, Anoka-Hennepin School District, Minnesota

"There are many resources for literacy coaches, but this is the most helpful and comprehensive of them all. The third edition draws on Bean's continuing experience and research, and can be used by all who are passionate about improving literacy instruction in schools. I recommend it as a text for graduate classes focused on the organization and supervision of literacy programs, or for use in staff development with district literacy coaches and reading specialists. If a literacy coach could have just one professional book on her shelf, this should be it!"--Misty Sailors, PhD, Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching, University of Texas at San Antonio

"An ideal text for graduate-level courses for aspiring reading specialists and literacy coaches. Among the highlights of the third edition is that it more thoroughly addresses the role of the reading specialist at the middle and high school levels, among many other updates. With a focus on the practical, this book offers useful tools, effective strategies, and sage advice to help reading specialists and literacy coaches improve their professional practice."--Laurie Elish-Piper, PhD, Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of Literacy and Elementary Education, Northern Illinois University
