About the Book

Based on the results of an international research project carried out in 1993 by the University of Iceland, School Libraries and the Electronic Community summarizes the responses of school librarians to questions about how they learned to use the Internet, and for what purposes. The author describes literature reviews that are available electronically, and analyzes policy documents. She provides both quantitative and content analyses of Internet traffic, on services related to librarianship and identifies those resources most helpful to school librarians. Her writing style is down to earth and she illustrates her text with numerous useful tables and figures. Individual chapters cover various features of the Internet-telnet, e-mail, gophers, listservs, and the World Wide Web. School librarians can easily learn to "surf the Net" to reach useful resources like computerized library catalogs and professional resources like LM_NET, a world-wide discussion group for school library media specialists. As libraries become increasingly computerized, this is a resource that no school librarian can be without.

About the Author :
Laurel A. Clyde is Associate Professor of Social Science at the University of Iceland, Reykjavik. She writes a regular column called "Info Tech" for Emergency Librarian.

Review :
The teacher-librarian is provided with all the necessary background to better understand the main focus of this work, a research report...provides quantitative and content analysis of Internet traffic, summaries of school librarians responses, and many analyses of literature, electronic sources and policies. The book will be of general interest to anyone using the Net, and particularly for Listservs. Various services available are mentioned and their use for and in schools analysed. Chapters one and six are particularly useful...well worth dipping into... A handbook to allow children's specialists to take their place as specialists and managers. The historical background on the development of the Internet is clearly and succinctly presented. Overall, this is a good project at the time, it has some interesting and useful information. A highly readable, well researched and clearly laid out book. It contains lengthy bibliographies (both printed and electronic) at the end of each section, a comprehensive index and a detailed list of contents...a good glossary, gives many suggestions for using electronic communications in schools...the author makes a number of very sound observations on security, student access, the importance of global electronic information in the school library and the future explosion of digital information.
