Excerpt: ... CHAPTER II. READING. 1. Object of Teaching Reading.--The teacher's object should be to enable every child to decipher, comprehend, and utter the word-signs of the language. (a) The child should be able to recognize immediately every word-sign which may be placed before him, or, in-other words, be able to read with fluency. (b) He ought to acquire the power of assigning the precise meaning to every word. (c) He should be able to utter and express accurately and correctly every word which is presented to him. 2. Methods of Teaching.--The object of the various methods which have from time to time been proposed is to develop, in the shortest possible time, the power of associating the arbitrary word-signs with the living sounds of the language. Several methods have been proposed, the principal of which are: --I. The Analytical Method, commonly known as the "look and say" method, by which the teacher takes complete words and sentences, and endeavours to establish a connection between the word-signs and their sounds by frequent repetition, and by the children's acquaintance with the meaning of the words. Its advantages.--(1) It is argued that this is the natural way of gaining knowledge, and that it is in this way children learn to talk. (2) It is said to be the quickest of all methods for enabling the child to read. (3) It recognizes the proper place of spelling, which ought to follow and not precede reading. Objections.--It neglects spelling, and does not enable the child to recognize new words, because it has no means of arriving at the sound which it would have if spelling preceded reading.
