The word "fair," in the phrase "fair white linen cloth " in the rubric, is a technical word; not meaning "clean," but "made beautiful by fitting ornamentation." The Lord's Prayer, at the beginning, was formerly the Celebrant's private prayer, and said in the Sacristy. At a subsequent revision the Church ordered him to say it, not in the Sacristy, but at the foot of the Altar, humbly inclining. At a still later revision She carried its recital by him up to the right side of the Altar. Being the Celebrant's personal prayer, it is not to be repeated by the people. The rubric says, the minister shall say it; and the "Amen" being in Roman, shows that he alone, having said the prayer, shall alone say also the "Amen."
