Excerpt from book: CHAPTER IV IRVING The first production of an American author to gain general recognition in England as a work of pure literature was the Sketch Book of Washington Irving. It was not until late in 1818 that he again turned his attention to writing; and the first part of the Sketch Book, containing four pieces, was not published in America until May, 1819. Copies must have found their way to England with reasonable promptness. The author apparently first saw his own work in print some time in July.
