The story of the Knowles Riot, as it has been called, a somewhat famous event in our Provincial history which gave rise to the suit of Knowles v. Douglass, is more or less fully told in all historical accounts of Boston.1 Many papers pertaining to this suit are among the Early Court Files of Suffolk, which fill out various details of the Riot, and give a life and color and vividness that can come only from the testimony of eye-witnesses and actual participators in the occurrences. So much of the story of the Riot as is necessary to an understanding of the suit may be briefly told.
