Itoo. CHAPTER V. PRELIMINARY TRAINING FOR THE CURE OF SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS. In every branch of human effort, careful and prudent training is essential to secure good results. The bigger the aim in view the greater the necessity for a thorough grasp of fundamentals, and for careful graduated training. The self- conscious person is not exempt from this necessity: if he wishes to get rid of his trouble he must make up his mind to submit to preliminary training before attacking in earnest his particular form of self-consciousness. SECTION TWENTY-EIGHT. THE FIRST STAGE. In Part Two it has been shown that fear is the root cause of self-consciousness, hence the first stage in the cure of self-consciousness must concern itself with the initial action towards the control of fear. I use the word control with purpose, for it is impossible to prevent fear from entering consciousness; it is an emotion?an innate tendency?and liable to arise from numerous stimuli. Fear must be recognized?it cannot be ignored. Fear is a tremendous force in life; it can destroy, but it can also create; it unlocks hidden sources of power, and forces us to make the attempt to use them. This will be clear to you when you reflect that the correlate instinct offear is flight. Now flight is really a call to action, a putting forth of all our activity to escape from that which causes us to fear. We must ask the self-conscious person to dwell a little upon this idea of fear being a force. Try to grasp that it is a call to action, a call to put forth energy. Remember that flight is not the sole channel of activity; the call is to all the powers of our organism.
