Whether we could have been differently formed, or not, whether we might have had more or better senses, whether we might have had an instinctive, or intuitive perception of all that seems to be good, or evil to us, are vain speculations, which arraign the wisdom and benevolence of the creative power. If man had been gifted with such perception, he must have been an inferior animal, to what he certainly is; and must have been denied the trust of free inquiry, and free agency. He is believed to have been entrusted with the right, and duty, of learning and of judging for himself, in what manner, and with what materials, he shall make up the sum of his own welfare; and from what he shall abstain, however inviting and seductive, that the amount of good shall far overbalance that which he calls evil. The commands of the great Lawgiver are supposed to have been designed to be thus understood;--There are placed before you the means of happiness. Learn the laws of your own being, and the qualities of the objects which are associated with it. Govern yourself by the high gift of reason. If you are faithful and just to yourself, you shall live and enjoy; the animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdoms, are submitted to your use, not for the mere purpose of prolonging existence, but to impart also innocent and rational pleasure. Exercise and cultivate all your faculties to these ends. The earth shall rejoice, and be grateful for your labors; its surface shall be enriched, by your healthy action, with abundant harvests, with delicious fruits, and with flowers, which in their form, coloring, and fragrance, shall delight your senses.
