The public walk on Northernhay having been ruined in the civil wars, the fine elms cut down, and the scite again converted into an out-work, or counterscarp of the castle, was now levelled, newly gravelled, upwards of 200 young elms planted, and seats erected. In the year 1667, the old lines and outworks to the city walls, upon Seuthernhay, were levelled, and formed into pleasant walks, on which upwards of 200 young elms were planted in different rows. These trees have long sisce been removed, and their place is now occupied by grass plots. On the Commotion, or Rebellion of the Duke of Monmouth in 1685, the sanguinary Lord Chief Justice Jefferies was sent into the West with a special commission of Oyer and Terminer, to try the delinquents, attended by a body of troops, under the command of CoL Kirk, notorious for his cruelty: they proceeded to the greatest acts of inhumanity, sparing neither age nor sex. In the-course of their circuit, they condemned above 500 persons; 239 were executed, 80 of whom suffered in ExetM; and their mangled quarters were exposed on trees m the public roads, to the disgust aud annoyance of travellers. Exeter, by its constant adherence to its Motto, Semper Fidelia, has been renowned by all historians for its inviolable fidelity to its Sovereigns. Defoe observes, that the magistrates of this city in his time sent two loyal addresses, one to King James and the other to King William, both within six weeks. In the year 688, the Prince of Orange, afterwards King William III. arrived in this city, but the Bishop (Dr. Lamplugh) flying to London, the magistrate. deterred by his example, received him but coldly, as Some of the elms planted at that time are still standing in situ, ...
