Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III A True Marsovian Herdi Vapin, the young man who disturbed the peace of the merry party, was twenty-one years of age and superintendent of the Rovitz bank?its fourth position of trust?and his father was hopeful that he might rise through the offices of teller and cashier and in time become the head of that moneyed institution. The bank at this time, in response to an appeal from Prince Nikola and the Marsovian Senate, was preparing to assist the government, and hence had called in all its loans. A vast sum of money had accumulated in the vaults. Herdi had the entire charge of the bank's strong boxes. The year previous, the young man had passed a season at Monte Carlo and become infatuated with its games. Being of an ingenious turn of mind, he had devised a scheme for beating thegreat gambling house. By the simple plan of playing one color and tripling the risk every time he lost, he calculated that the tide of ill fortune must turn if the player only had the means to hold out. It was a very old system, worked a hundred times and always with failure, but he reckoned it was because its backer lacked the enormous resources necessary to make it a success. He figured that the red or black could not possibly lose twenty-five times in succession. He had purchased a roulette wheel and tried to experiment in his private room, using bits of paper for bank bills, and he had acquired a colossal fortune with his imaginary money. It only remained to convert it into real money by playing real money.
