Excerpt from book: AMOS: THE LOYAL WITNESS. AMOS lived whilst Jeroboam II. was on the throne of Israel, and King Uzziah reigned in Judah. He was a herdman, and a gatherer of sycamore fruit. (vii. 14.) During part of the year he was shepherding the flocks and herds upon the pastures of Tekoa, near Bethlehem of Judah; and in the autumn he gathered the wild figs, which grew abundantly in the valleys; cutting them to get rid of their acrid juice, and so preparing them for food. Amos had no professional training. He was neither a prophet, he tells us, nor a son of the prophets. (Amos vii. 14.) But he was a man of tender conscience, of dauntless courage, and by no means ignorant of the religious knowledge of his day. We shall first notice the condition of the people to whom he prophesied, and then review his prophecy. The reign of Jeroboam II. has been called the St. Martin's Summer of the kingdom of Israel. That second or autumnal summer, about St. Martin's Day (November llth), which Shakespeare speaks of Expect St. Martin's Summer, halcyon days; or, as it is also called, from All Saints' Day (November 1st), Then followed that beautiful season, called by the pious Arcadian peasants the summer of All Saints'. (Shakespeare's Henry VI. I. ii. 132, and Longfellow's Evangeline.) So in the autumnal or later years of the kingdom, Jeroboam was one of the most prosperous of the kings of Israel. Encouraged by the prophet Jonah, he had repelled the Syrians, conquered Damascus, and all the outlying country from Hamath in the north to the Dead Sea. (2 Kings xiv. 25-28.) Commerce and trade increased, and people grew rich. They had their summer and winter residences, built of stone (Amos iii. 15), adorned with ivory brought up from Africa (ib.), and furnished with costly couches...
