WITH THE MAGERSFONTEIN WOUNDED. NO. ?0 TENT, NO. 2 GENERAL HOSPITAL, WYNBERG. 1899, December igrn. On land'-in South Africa. When we tumbled out of our hammocks at 43.111. yesterday, the cry was'quickly passed, land in sight. We crowded on deck to find the moon shining in full, and land straight ahead buried in black banks of cloud. To the east was a yellow-looking island with breakers throwing up line after line of white foam on its beach. This was Robin Island, a leper reserve. A lighthouse on it was throwing out faint beams on the morning light. The morning rapidly advanced as we slowly steamed into the harbour. It was thick with shipping. Line upon line of steamships, mostly troopers of the Castle Line, with black topped red funnels, and Clan liners. A four funnelled ironclad lay near, during the morning she cleared decks for action in fine style, all rails and ventilators disappearing like lightning, and the guns run out. Inside the larger shipping lay a crowd of sailing vessels with a forest of masts. The clouds gradually cleared away, and then slowly appeared the mass of houses of Cape Town, behind which towered the grim heights of Table Mountain, with a fleecy cover of mist crowning it. We came in close to the breakwater, where we remained until 3 p.m. All of us on board paraded in full marching order, and after our last dinner of bully and biscuit on board, the order came for the Munsters and St. Johns to disembark. The ' Ministers went off first, in a small tug, 400 of them packed likesardines, the Dorsets band played them off and we cheered them lustily. We had to await the tug's return before our turn came. It was fun jumping in as the waves rolled and bumped the tug about; one helmet went overboard. . We were glad to get away...
