About the Book

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1880. Excerpt: ... So small is my churchyard that big chestnut-trees on either side almost join hands across it, but grass springs lusty over the dead of a thousand years. Death was then no theme for sentimental regret, for flowers, or verses other than martial. Too many households mourned for those who lay in graves unknown, cut off on duty obscure, fulfilling destinies themselves did not understand. In that grim vault yonder should repose a youth, the heir of broad lands round, but deprived of his very tomb. I stood by when they laid him under palm-trees and tall feathery ferns, whilst the guns of the retreating foe rolled sullenly away before us.... A churchyard is a fitting place to meditate on late events and present personages. Ambition has its goal here--or its Golgotha, to which human lives are tossed. It was a fine game anciently, one still studied and applauded in the schools. The conquerors and the statesmen of old time appear as grand abstractions, awful embodiments of fate, whose doings we may be taught to abhor, but must...
