About the Book

Understanding Giftedness: A Practical Guide for Parents answers the most frequently asked questions Dr. Suzy Thompson receives from parents of gifted children, and is a collection of everything that she wished her parents had known when they were raising her. Whereas most books about gifted/talented children are aimed at educators, this book is written specifically for the parents and guardians of these children. Dr. Thompson explains how gifted children develop differently from their same-aged peers intellectually, emotionally, physically, and socially. She shares some of the most common struggles they face from elementary school through early college years, and will give you advice on how to not only understand your gifted child's feelings but how to connect with your gifted child as well. In her opinion, the parents and guardians are the most important people in a gifted child's life. They need you. About the Author Dr. Suzy Thompson is a fierce advocate for gifted children. She earned her doctorate from Texas A&M University in Educational Psychology specializing in Intelligence, Creativity, and Giftedness and has continued advocating for this population as a researcher, professor, and educational psychologist since her graduation in 2006. Dr. Thompson has presented her research at both national and international conferences, in various school districts, and in various parent groups. No audience is too big or too small. In her opinion, every parent has the right to understand his/her gifted children. Furthermore, as the Founder of Understanding Giftedness, L.L.C., she conducts counseling and life-coaching sessions for gifted, talented, and creative children and adults in Austin, Texas and educates other counselors to help them understand the unique social and emotional needs of their gifted clients. She is also a proud member of the Association of Christ-based Counselors, Educators, and Educational Systems.
