About the Book

Irving Berlin and his family fled anti-Jewish Russia before he went on to become one of America's most popular commercial composers. As a self-taught pianist, Berlin is responsible for many hit songs such as "God Bless America," "White Christmas," as well as the musical Annie Get Your Gun. Author Paul Kaplan traces the path of the man behind the songs through this rags-to-riches story and Berlin's place in the music business in the early twentieth century, including the tragedies that befell him on this journey.

About the Author :
Paul Kaplan is a talented researcher and prolific writer in multiple genres and platforms. This is his seventh published title and second biography for young people. Lillian Wald: America's Great Social and Healthcare Reformer was the recipient of a Kirkus Starred Review.

Review :
"Paul Kaplan has written a remarkable biography that takes us deep inside Irving Berlin's story and context, his thoughts, fears, and challenges, and then uplifts us with his dreams and successes--and his legacy. Berlin continues to impact the music world today and Kaplan reminds us why he always will."--Karen E. Seiger, author of Markets of New York City: A Guide to the Best Artisan, Farmer, Food, and Flea Markets Legendary composer Jerome Kern wrote, "(Irving) Berlin has no place in American music. He is American Music." He wrote some 1,500 tunes in a career that spanned nine decades. These include "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "God Bless America," "Puttin' on the Ritz" "White Christmas" and "A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody." Lawyer-turned-author Paul Kaplan has crafted a concise but well-written biography, "Irving Berlin: From Penniless Immigrant to America's Songwriter" (Pelican Publishing, 144 pgs., $10.95). Do not be misled by the publisher labeling this a teen or young adult book. It is more than that. It is a thoroughly enjoyable examination of the ups and downs of Berlin's career, which required him to accommodate the musical world in which he lived. Until the last two decades of his life, he was able to swing with the times, but ultimately in his 80s, he found himself "out of step." With his wife, he became a recluse and rarely ventured out of his New York City Beekman Place apartment. His wife died in 1988, and he died in 1989 at age 101. Although Berlin has been dead for more than 30 years, his music lives on, Kaplan writes. His hit songs such as "Cheek to Cheek" are performed by modern superstars, such as Lady Gaga in duet with Tony Bennett. Enjoy, enjoy! Have a comment or suggestion for Kale?
