About the Book

In 1974, a tiny band of self-styled urban guerrillas, calling itself the Symbionese Liberation Army, abducts a newspaper heiress, who then takes the guerrilla name 'Tania' and shocks the world by choosing to remain with her former captors. Has she been brainwashed? Why else would such a nice girl disavow her loving parents, her adoring fiance, her comfortable home? Why would she adopt the SLA's cri de guerre, 'Death to the Fascist Insect that Preys Upon the Life of the People'? Soon most of the SLA are dead, killed in a suicidal confrontation with police in Los Angeles, forcing Tania and her two remaining comrades - the pompous and abusive General Teko and his duplicitous lieutenant, Yolanda - into hiding, where they will remain for the next sixteen months. These are the months of Tania's sentimental education.

About the Author :
Christopher Sorrentino is the author of one previous novel, Sound on Sound (1995). He lives in Brooklyn

Review :
Particularly impressive is Sorrentino's protean writing, which mimics a wide spectrum of idiolects. He gets inside the heads of all his characters, and the paragraphs slither between their different minds. Street hustlers, crumpled FBI agents, even Alice's toffee-nosed mother, for whom a dog is "in many ways, more valuable and satisfying than a daughter": the comprehensive arc of humanity astounds. Trance is an epic, epoch-defining achievement, up there with the finest works by Don DeLillo Daily Telegraph "This substantial book cleverly reinvents this story with a handsome helping of historical and contemporary satire" The Times One of the most humane and haunting novels I've read in years - also the funniest and most incisive evocation of the 1970s - Trance will be placed on the very highest shelf of that art which explains the twentieth century to the twenty-first - Jonathan Lethem ...the writing is packed with pizzazz. The SLA and Patty/Tania changed America, just for a moment. Sorrentino makes that moment feel momentous Scotland on Sunday one of this year's most surprising works of fiction. By turns indulgent and amazing. Boston Globe
