About the Book

Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics is a comprehensive, practical guide for postgraduate students advising how and when to use more advanced statistical methods. Perfect for students without a mathematical background, the authors refresh important basics such as descriptive statistics and research design as well as introducing essential upper-level techniques to cater for the advanced student.

Key Features:

- Comprehensive guide informing how to use a range of advanced statistical methods such as MANOVA, path analysis and logistical regression;

- Inter-disciplinary: ideal for students studying upper level statistical methods in any subject across the social sciences;

- Practical guide: case studies, further reading, key terms explained in order to help the non-mathematically orientated student get ahead with their research.

Building on undergraduate statistical grounding, Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the upper-level researcher with the knowledge of what advanced statistics do, how they should be used, and what their output means.

Review :
Foster and colleagues provide basic understanding and knowledge of some statistical procedures being increasingly used in numerous diverse real-life situations; this volume particularly addresses problems in the social sciences. . . .This is an interesting book with complex statistical procedures in a simple, easy-to-understand style. It should appeal to all readers with limited knowledge of mathematics who want to learn the applications of these techniques. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Very easy to understand, providing a good overview. Good for applied researchers! Easy to read introduction to more complex statistical methods. I found this book very easy and pleasant to read, with clear explanations of the different methods throughout and good use of illustrative examples and supportive exercises. I will certainly be recommending this to our students to help them get to grips with advanced statistics! Very useful textbook for Social Science post-graduate students! It provides a good overview of different advanced statistical methods and is very palatable, even to those who are not very mathematically inclined. I would have liked to see more mathematics. This text is a provides a good introduction to more advanced statististics and gives a good overview of several increasingly popular and relevant techniques. It would be ideal for final year and post graduate students embarking on advanced analysis. Will recommend for library stock and as a valuable purchase for post grads seeking a career in statistics Nice slim volume useful for graduate students in clinical psychology At the moment, it is still unclear if the course I had in mind when I ordered the copy will be a reality.

On the other hand, I am very impressed with the book - this is exactly the kind of tool I wish I′d had available when I first learned the ropes in statistics, and I have been using it myself already.

Any student who is moving from basic-level skill-and-drill training in e.g. SPSS to reading quantitative research in detail and conducting their own studies will benefit greatly from this clear and highly readable text, which starts (and continually summarizes) where most basic training for e.g. psychology students leaves off.

I have already recommended it to many students and colleagues, and will definitely adapt it next time i teach a relevant class. A really good book, it offers a useful view of advanced stats in an easy to follow way. I can see this being extremely useful for those students who want to use more advanced stats or those working with slightly more complex data. I have no issues adding this text to my reading list and will happily recommend it to students. The language and style of writing is very student friendly The book provides some basic, but clear and sufficient explanation of more advanced statistical techniques. I would not recommend it for beginners and people who want to gain a deep understanding of basic, and more advanced statistics, but would recommend it for those who want to use them in practice. Very good, step by step guide trough the research process, followed by suitable "statistical" examples."
