Not illustrated. 1914 Excerpt: ...the retail market quite active, but not reflected to any great extent in the wholesale demand. BITUMINOUS STRONG AT END OF YEAR. While the bituminous trade was in a very strong position at the end of 1912 and an active market was expected to run well into the new year, it quickly showed signs of weakening on account of the unseasonable weather prevailing, and, whereas prices on high-grade Pennsylvania coals were as high as $2 around January 1st, a month later the same coals were selling around $1.50. with a very light demand. Coal was also selling on the cars at Mystic Wharf around March 1st at more than a dollar less than it would have brought six weeks before, so sharp was the slump. A considerable volume of tonnage was closed up in the early part of the season at an advance in most cases of from 10 to 15 cents per ton over the prices obtained in 1912; New River and Pocahontas figures being around $2.85 or about 15 cents increase over those of the preceding year. Spot bituminous business was very unsatisfactory during April and May, but conditions improved rapidly during June, and the middle of July found prices firm and ranging from $1.40 to $1.60 on all-rail Pennsylvania coal of good grade, while New River and Pocahontas coals were bringing $3.90 to $4.24 on the cars at Mystic Wharf for spot shipment. The demand for contract coal was very heavy during the fall months, but the spot market fell away gradually until there was no amount of spot business being booked worth mentioning. Deliveries by both rail and water were prompt throughout the year, and the car shortages which are usually prevalent in the fall and early winter were not in evidence toward the end of 1913.
