About the Book

This is the definitive companion to the study of metaphysics. It provides students with an accessible, comprehensive and philosophically rigorous introduction to all the key concepts, issues and debates. Ideal for use on undergraduate courses, the structure and content of this textbook closely reflect the way metaphysics is studied. Thematically structured, the text introduces all the various philosophical problems addressed by metaphysics through the idea of truth-making, a useful lens through which the topic is clearly and concisely explicated. With a particular focus on method in contemporary metaphysics, the book examines a variety of metaphysical topics, including the nature of properties, time, causation and objects. The book offers lucid and incisive coverage of the field of metaphysics, its key concepts and current debates. Jonathan Tallant's cogent and thorough analysis is supplemented by student-friendly features, including chapter summaries, study questions and a comprehensive guide to further reading. Each chapter includes a series of specially designed mind-maps to help students visualise the logical space being explored and how the arguments push in different directions.

Table of Contents:

About the Author :
Jonathan Tallant is Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Nottingham, UK.

Review :
This is an excellent introduction to metaphysics. The framework provided by truth-maker theory is helpful without unduly taking over. The selection of topics is eminently sensible. The coverage of the relevant arguments and views in each chapter is clear, illuminating and very fair. The provision in each chapter of questions for discussion, selected further readings, and mind-map is also useful. This should be a successful text book for many introductory metaphysics courses. In this thorough and well-written introduction to metaphysics, Jonathan Tallant has provided students and teachers of metaphysics with an exceedingly useful book covering the major topics in metaphysics. The discussion questions and references at the end of each chapter enhance the content and make it an ideal text for a course in metaphysics. 'Jonathan Tallant has produced a well-informed and very up-to-date survey of the "hot" topics in contemporary analytic metaphysics, nicely unified by the theme of truth-making. It should prove to be an invaluable aid to undergraduate teaching and a useful resource for anyone wanting to know what is going on in metaphysics today.'
