Review :
Expanded and updated - still absolutely the best text for teaching and learning about discourse analysis. For the student, Paltridge is clear, comprehensive and - above all - lively and approachable. For the teacher, Paltridge provides unparalleled practical support: a perfectly-structured, semester-long curriculum, exercises, project topics, and teaching materials on the companion website. No-one could ask for more. What is most commendable about this revised and expanded edition is the broadness of its scope, on the one hand, and precise focus on details, on the other. Paltridge uses real life examples of human encounters in contemporary contexts, thus making the text engaging for and relevant to today's teachers and students. A comprehensive contribution to the educational literature on discourse analysis, the book is equally appealing to beginners and experienced discourse analysts. Written in an engaging and readable style, Discourse Analysis: 2e contains an excellent overview of central issues in discourse analysis. In this updated volume, the author not only draws on a wealth of textual examples but also expands the view of discourse as constructed by how words combine with other modalities. This volume is sure to appeal to anyone who wishes to advance their understanding and study of discourse in different contexts. Brian Paltridge's Discourse Analysis: An Introduction is an extremely welcome addition to the growing number of books devoted to this increasingly important area. Exceptionally, the volume strikes an excellent balance between both spoken and written discourses, as well as between theoretical and applied studies. The coverage of previous work is comprehensive, but many of the copious illustrations are drawn from lively contemporary texts that will appeal to readers. Further, each of the seven central chapters is rounded off with the discussion questions, suggestions for data analysis projects, and directions for further reading. Finally, the the writing is lively and accessible. There is every prospect then that Paltridge will become a standard text for undergraduates and graduates studying discourse analysis for the first time. This book provides a very accessible introduction to discourse analysis, illustrated with compelling examples and drawing insightfully on a wide range of the latest research. Core concepts are clearly defined and exemplified. I predict that this will prove an invaluable textbook for courses in Discourse Analysis both at senior undergraduate level and for graduate courses. The stimulating discussion questions and the suggestions for projects and further reading make it particularly attractive to teachers. The book finds a good balance between theoretical and applied issues in discourse analysis. Each chapter thoroughly explores methodological and theoretical premises of discourse analytic approaches, tracing their evolution and developments, and giving priority to the current trends...The book's strength lies particularly in its ability to establish connections between discursive concepts and first and second language teaching environments...it is recommendable both for students and teachers encountering discourse analysis for the first time. …students and researchers interested in discourse analysis should possess a copy of the book. Though the subtitle labels it an introduction to discourse analysis, the pages of the book provide simple yet shrewd coverage. Paltridge's book is an invaluable addition to the reading list of beginners and experienced discourse analysts. One of the best books out there on ''discourse analysis.' Highly recommended for post graduate students. Comprehensive, easy to read. Would also be beneficial to second year students preparing to for their final year project. I had inspected several textbooks on the topic and was most positively impressed by Paltridge's book as I found it to be concise and clear at the same time, which I regard crucial so as to suit the readers in my seminar. For me as the teacher, the accompanying materials also are of great help and which likewise corroborated my decision to use this text in my course.
