About the Book

This edited collection will explore the continued contestations over representations of African and African Diaspora history. Organized into three major parts: 1) The Politics of Remembering, 2) Interpreting the Past: Race, Nation, and Citizenship, and 3) History as Popular Culture: Film, Literature, and Music, Memory, Public History, &Representations will bring together articles that explore the ways in which slavery, colonialism, 'race, ' and citizenship have been treated in the media, popular culture, and state funded enterprises. Through an analysis of music, film, digital history, literature, heritage sites and other forms of commemoration, this collection assesses the forces which have shaped the production of history, the dissemination of historical representations and influenced popular perceptions of Africa and its diasporas. The articles in this edited work all contribute to the ongoing debate about the role of public history in the creation of national narratives and the relationship between historical memory and citizenship. The contributing scholars work in a range of fields including history, anthropology, literature, film studies, public history and sociology. Although there are some published studies exploring themes relating to history, memory, and public history, there is a dearth of works which focus specifically on Africa and its diasporas.
