About the Book

This book features a wholly original examination of the role of aesthetic reflection in the formation of ethical subjects, situated in the work of Kant, Nietzsche and Adorno. "Aesthetics, Globalisation and the Ethical Subject: Kant, Nietzsche, Adorno" examines the role of aesthetic reflection in the formation of ethical subjects and the development of reciprocal relations between individuals. It demonstrates that aesthetic reflection, which includes both aesthetic judgement and aesthetic creativity, involves skills and processes that are similar to those required in the formation of ethical subjectivity and ethical relations. The groundwork for this investigation is laid by Immanuel Kant, who depicts the individual as an autonomous, rational agent that is capable of, and indeed responsible for, determining his or her own judgement. Friedrich Nietzsche and Theodor Adorno build upon Kant's claim concerning the subject's autonomy to put forward two very different interpretations of what it means to be or become an ethical subject. Tanja Juric shows how the approach of each of these three thinkers can contribute to the creation of an intersubjectively developed ethical subject that is sophisticated and robust enough to face the complexities of living in today's globalised world: "Continuum Studies in Continental Philosophy" presents cutting-edge scholarship in the field of modern European thought. The wholly original arguments, perspectives and research findings in titles in this series make it an important and stimulating resource for students and academics from across the discipline.
