About the Book

This book explains how we learn, how our pre-conscious experience-trapping neural networks generalise and abstract from a stream of personal and cultural experiences, to construct our causal maps and models of reality, our value systems and our emotional associations. It explores the strengths and weaknesses of human thinking and shows how we can take conscious control of our personal development, updating old and dysfunctional models of reality to take account of new experiences and changed circumstances. It opens up the possibility of rewriting the HOWs and WHYs that drive our behaviour and motivation, and presents a powerful new Graphical Thinking Tool that everyone can use, individually or in groups, to explore and understand the deep structure of any problem, any system, and any body of knowledge. Understanding may be unfashionable, but it is still 'the ultimate study skill', and the key to success in any field of endeavour.

About the Author :
As an undiagnosed dyslexic he fumbled an unconventional route through school and university, but went on to enjoy careers in music, housing development, database programming, systems analysis, artificial intelligence and software design. He got a second chance to enter the world of ideas, and repair the gaping holes in his education, the day he realised that the systems diagramming tools he was using to analyse complex business problems could be applied just as effectively to understanding the deep structure of any subject domain. These tools gave him a way to access and consolidate knowledge and ideas that had previously been hidden away from him behind impenetrable clouds of vague and ambiguous text. Fascinated by the intellectual and communicative power of these tools, he set off on a journey to find out why these tools are so powerful. He went back to business school to research the effects of conflict on participants' decision making strategies and for 10 years he was a regular at the British Library. He read the neuroscience journals, the classics, and anything that might have left clues to the history and mechanisms of human thinking. He attended lectures, talked to experts and built artificial neural networks to model and test the latest discoveries about the brain's amazing neural switching mechanisms. He simplified the diagramming tools and techniques, to make them more suitable for use as general purpose thinking and study tools and piloted this new approach to 'thinking skills' with a group of 'illiterate/dyslexic' prisoners and several groups of excluded school kids (with great results). Now, for the first time, this systemic-graphical approach to thinking is made available to the public.
