About the Book

During a faculty versus the students baseball game, the teachers try some dirty tricks to win. Luckily, the students have a monster on their team. With the help of Gabby's beastly pet, Dwight, the student team might stand a chance of winning. Or, maybe not! Turns out Dwight's not exactly a skilled player.

About the Author :
Robert Marsh grew up in Omaha, but longed to live somewhere else. He pretended he didn't live in Omaha by reading lots and lots of comics and books. He went to the library every week and checked out twenty books at a time. Since he didn't have time to read all those books before they were due, he would read the first chapter of each book then make up the rest of the story in his head. Robert now makes up stories for a living. He doesn't live in Omaha. He lives somewhere else. Dreams do come true.

Review :
I Just did The Monster Marsh! Or, more specifically, I just read two of Robert Marsh's Monster and Me graphic novels. I read Monster Moneymaker, a hilarious story reminiscent of The Chocolate War, but with monsters, and Monster in the Outfield, in which the blue hairy beast known as Dwight helps his keeper, 12-year-old Gabby, and her team mates beat her school's teachers at a game of baseball. The series works under the premise that every kid has a monster, but most people keep theirs hidden. Not Gabby, though, who lets Dwight out of the closet and free to cause as much mayhem as his good heart will let him. The series is funny, pleasingly weird and has just the right blend of wackiness and ribald. Tom Percival's unique art is both strangely effective and effectively strange and never fails to get the story across. The books are geared toward striving readers at the elementary and middle school levels and are just one of a series of comics-inspired books from Capstone Kids, a division of Capstone Publishers, which seeks to serve the needs of prek-12 readers. I have no idea how Capstone has escaped my prying eyes to date, but I'm glad I learned about them through Marsh's exquisitely silly and enjoyable books.-- "EN/SANE World Blog" Summary: Gabby's pet monster Dwight really loves baseball, so when the annual Teachers vs. Students game comes around, he's excited to play. Which is great, because this year the Teachers have recruited some serious beefed up superstars. Lucky for the students to have a monster on the team, but at first it seems like he has no clue on how to play the game. Will Gabby and Dwight help the students defeat the teachers, or will they only make their team worse? Review: This graphic novel mixes reality with fantasy. Obviously, monsters do not exist in the real world, but it's fun for kids to see what it could be like if you had a pet monster that went to school with you. The graphics are great and the reading level is great for struggling readers. For kids there is a glossary of words in the graphic novel they may not know the meaning too. Also, there's also instructions of how students can draw their very own monster. For teacher and librarians, there is a great set of discussion questions and writing prompts that can be used with the book. Definitely another great graphic novel for kids. http: //www.bookworminginthe21stcentury.com/2010/01/monster-in-outfield-graphic-novel.html-- "Bookworming in the 21st Century Blog"
