About the Book

Lincoln is the central axis of this story about America's seemingly unstoppable march toward war, the shattering of its political landscape, and its grappling with the moral underpinnings of a republic of the people, by the people, and for the people. Here are such key events as the Mexican-American War, the Dred Scott Case, westward expansion, the rise of the industrial north, the Lincoln-Douglas debates, and the birth of the Republican Party. And here we meet Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Zachary Taylor, Stephen Douglas, and abolitionists Wendell Phillips, John Brown, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and Harriet Beecher Stowe. We see it all through the breathtaking writings of Lincoln himself, detailing his emergence onto the political scene and the evolution of his beliefs about the Union, democracy, slavery, and civil war.

About the Author :
John C. Waugh is the award-winning author of four other books about the Civil War, two of which have won major awards. He is a former bureau chief of the Christian Science Monitor, and his writing has appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe, and Civil War Times Illustrated. David Drummond has made his living as an actor for over twenty-five years, appearing on stages large and small. He received an AudioFile Earphones Award for his first audiobook, Love 'Em or Lose 'Em: Getting Good People to Stay. When not narrating, he keeps busy writing plays and stories for children.

Review :
"One Man Great Enough is a treasure. It is a gift to all of us as we approach Abraham Lincoln's 200th birthday. Richly written, it is the wonderful story of the evolving leadership and political courage of an American who should be emulated by every public official." -- "Frank J. Williams, founding chair of the Lincoln Forum" "As always, John C. Waugh combines a historian's vision with a journalist's nose for news--and the result is another rich page-turner that will make readers think they are along for Abraham Lincoln's improbable ride to fame." -- "Harold Holzer, cochairman, US Lincoln Bicentennial Commission" "Journalist-historian John C. Waugh has scored another tour de force. Waugh provides special dimensions to the exciting story that brought the right man to the presidency as the nation faced its greatest crisis." -- "Edwin Cole Bearss, author of Fields of Honor: Pivotal Battles of the Civil War" "General audiences will delight in Waugh's expansive narrative full of colorful anecdotes. This book vividly illustrates why Abraham Lincoln remains a touchstone for democracy." -- "Thomas F. Schwartz, Illinois State Historian, Lincoln Presidential Library" "Lively prose backed with solid research...Waugh is particularly adept at weaving details of Lincoln's family life into the narrative." -- "Publishers Weekly (starred review)" "Waugh...recounts the 1864 election with great narrative skill.
