Violencia, genero y migracion en el Caribe hispano: Reescribiendo la nacion examina la representacion de la violencia y la nacion en la obra de escritoras y artistas contemporaneas del Caribe hispano y su diaspora en los Estados Unidos. Usando la teoria transnacional y postcolonial, la autora argumenta que estas artistas representan la violencia como algo integral a los sistemas de opresion inscritos en la nacion. Escritoras y artistas caribenas no solamente muestran las consecuencias de esta violencia sobre el cuerpo y la psique de los oprimidos, sino que tambien iluminan el poder y la subversion en su representacion. La violencia en todas sus manifestaciones (de genero, racial, sexual, contra el propio cuerpo) es el resultado de la imposicion de una identidad monolitica sobre subjetividades que estan en constante movimiento. Esta forma de opresion es de gran alcance, con su manifestacion mas prevalente en la retorica de la nacion, la cual, en Latinoamerica, ha sido elaborada por ciudadanos blancos, hombres y de clase social alta. Cualquiera que desafiara su definicion hegemonica de nacion, quedaba relegado a los margenes. Desde el siglo XIX, con los movimientos de independencia y la aparicion de las nuevas naciones latinoamericanas, la mujer ha sido usada como metafora de la nacion. En un mundo cada vez mas global, las escritoras y artistas del Caribe hispano desafian esa nocion al reescribir una nacion con fronteras difuminadas por su constante migracion y con la inclusion de miembros que han sido tradicionalmente oprimidos y posicionados fuera de la nacion.

Dolores Alcaide Ramirez recibio su doctorado en literatura latinoamericana de Purdue University y es profesora asistente de Estudios Hispanicos en la Universidad de Washington, Tacoma. Entre su lista de publicaciones se cuentan varios articulos sobre escritoras del Caribe como Mayra Montero, Loida Maritza Perez, Irene Vilar y Nancy Morejon.
