Review :
Reducing nutrition to the most basic of elements, each volume presents a food group in no more than two sentences per page, printed on white space below color photographs and illustrating healthy foods being enjoyed by a multicultural array of people. The vocabulary and sentence structure are ideal for beginning readers but the frequent oversimplification of concepts (e.g., "Milk is a drink that is made by some animals") pushes these books from being scientifically informative to an experience resembling a phonics lesson. The publishers acknowledge that the books' best use is as part of a more extensive nutrition curriculum: tips to parents and teachers are included in each title, as well as a picture glossary (again, very simple) and a quiz based on the text. -Rebecca Dash, New York Public Library School Library Journal November 2010-- "School Library Journal" This series about the five food groups and food pyramid shows young learners how different foods help their bodies grow. Each page is filled with bright color photographs and uses short sentences with large, crisp text. Some photos are labeled with food names, while others include a variety of children and families of all ages and ethnicities enjoying food, even vegetables. Any or all books from this series will be a wonderful addition to health lessons. Teachers and readers will enjoy the author's organization and interactive page for readers to find the food being studied. Each book also includes "How it helps your body," My Pyramid (from USDA), and a picture glossary. Table of Contents. Index. - Brenda Rogers, Educational Reviewer, Kent, Washington Library Media Connection November/December 2010 Issue-- "Library Media Connection" The reader learns that proteins are meat, fish, eggs, beans, and nuts. Brief text explains where each of these proteins comes from. The reader learns that protein provides energy to work and play and helps our bodies stay healthy and grow. Emphasis is given to eating healthy foods from the food pyramid and avoiding meat that has too much fat. This book is a good purchase for an introduction to the meat and protein portion of the food pyramid. - Pam Hall, Corey School Arlington Independent School District 11/12/2010-- "Arlington Independent School District" This book clues us in on what kinds of foods are the best for our health. We can eat meat, fish, nuts, eggs and beans for our bodies to receive protein. Protein will help our bodies be healthy. Great pictures of all of the best meat and proteins to eat are photographed here. -Omaha Public Schools 6/30/2011-- "Omaha Public Schools" With just one sentence per page and large colorful photographs, this simple series about the USDA's MyPlate program could be shared in a small preschool setting. Five of the titles provide the most basic information about one food group each-complete with examples, the associated benefits, and any risks to consider, such as eating too much fat-while the final volume delivers a MyPlate program overview. Notes to parents and teachers provide suggestions for introducing the books and extension activities. A well balanced offering for the youngest audience. - Heather Acerro, Rochester Public Library, MN School Library Journal April 2012 Issue-- "School Library Journal"
