About the Book

All around the world there are charities trying to save the environment, from campaigning for government action on climate change, pollution, and energy use, to caring for woodland and beaches. This book looks at the efforts of charity workers and volunteers, with exciting stories and case studies, and gives advice on how readers can get involved.

About the Author :
Andrew Langley is a prolific author of books for children, with a special interest in history and the environment. He has been short-listed for several major awards, most recently with books on natural disasters and Hiroshima.

Review :
Each book in the Charities in Action series presents compelling stories and case studies which bring to life historical background, provide context for relevant statistical information, offer national and global perspectives, and suggest various ways to volunteer and become involved in that book's charitable cause. While not minimizing the challenges, each book maintains an upbeat perspective, focusing on progress and possibilities. Benefit concerts, micro financing, sponsorship programs, and sports for social change are a few of the diverse approaches to overcoming poverty "at home" as well as around the globe highlighted in Fighting Poverty. Caring for Animals Spotlights individuals, private organizations, and national and international organizations committed to ending animal cruelty, providing sanctuaries and shelters, protecting the future of endangered species, caring for older animals, and rescuing animals from natural disasters. Saving the Environment includes a focus on building public awareness for environmental change, along with the benefits, criteria, and realities of volunteering for charitable work. Organization, layout, and formatting enhance accessibility and engagement, with short chapters based on conceptual themes such as "Charities at Work," "Money and Publicity," and "Trade and Debt Campaigns." In addition to useful statistics and the glossary, resources for further information include books and web sites, and, where applicable, movies and documentaries. In addition to providing useful research information, books in the series will appeal to young readers interested in finding ways to make a difference. -Kim Carter Voya February 2013 Issue-- "Voya" This series highlights the work of international charitable organizations and encourages students to become personally involved in altruistic endeavors. Chapters describe why tragedies such as poverty, endangered animals, and sickness exist, and the authors use the stories of aid workers and the recipients of help and other primary sources to illustrate the positive impacts organizations have. Authors have admiration for the groups they profile and emphasize the importance of continuing financial and volunteer support for them. Captioned color photos and charts supplement the text, while sidebars profile individuals and feature anecdotes and additional facts. Contact information for aid organizations can be found at the end of each title. Readers interested in volunteer work will be able to find most of this information elsewhere. -- Mary Mueller, Rolla Public Schools, MO School Library Journal, "Series Made Simple" 11/1/2012-- "School Library Journal"
