Review :
Geared toward mid-elementary students, this series is comprised of seven unique books, each with a focus on a simple measurement concept, what it means, and how it relates to life. All books explore the tools and units we use to measure while showing meaningful and relevant examples. Each title contains vivid photographs, charts, and diagrams with captions, explanations, and examples. Questions are posed throughout the books to entice young learners to "stop and think" or continue reading for more information. Each informative book includes a "Fun Facts" section along with a "Find Out More" page where additional books and websites are recommended. A "Measurement Exploration Activity" helps readers to put what they have learned into practice by completing a simple experiment. This mathematics and science series would make an excellent addition to any classroom library. Glossary. Table of Contents. Index. -Laura Eisenberg Robinson, Classroom Teacher and Big6 Project Manager, Seattle, Washington Library Media Connection March/April 2011-- "Library Media Connection" This book is part of the series, "Measuring and Comparing". It has a table of contents and glossary. I especially like the scale diagram to compare objects and their weight. I think it helps put things in perspective for children. For example, it would take 5 1/2 toy scooter to weigh the same as a mountain bike. At the bottom of the page a question asks, "What is heavier than a bicycle?" Then there is a comparison between mountain bikes and a snowmobile. I also like the measuring activity and the page of heavy facts. There's a quiz to see which unit of measurement you would use to measure the weight of different objects. For instance, would you use ounces, pounds, or tons to measure a space ship. Good edition for science. It's probably around 3rd grade level. -Janie Gowan, Goodman School Arlington Independent School District 1/31/2011-- "Arlington Independent School District" Hot off the presses, this new, highly visual series makes the fundamentals of measuring and comparing easy to learn. Full-color photographs and diagrams of familiar everyday objects illustrate physical differences, helping young readers understand and conceptualize size comparisons. (For grades 1-3). (page 20) Educational Dealer September-- "Educational Dealer" If you are looking for a good book to introduce measuring and comparing the weights of objects, this one is it! The book goes through the process of weighing objects, discusses a variety of scales, and offers comparisons between vehicles using bright, colorful graphics. The layout makes it easy to read. The book includes a table of contents, glossary, index, and measuring activity, heavy quiz and facts, and bibliography for further reading. This would be a great resource to have on hand for primary classrooms when studying measurement and vehicles. - Mary Blair, Oak Valley School Omaha Public Schools 4/5/2012-- "Omaha Public Schools" This book teaches measuring and comparing various vehicles. The photos are excellent and the charts comparing and measuring vehicles will help the reader understand the importance of measuring and comparing. - Pat Wilson, Mary Calcott Elementary School Norfolk Public Schools3/1/2011-- "Norfolk Public Schools"
