Review :
Spare, declarative sentences coupled with bright, full-color photos make these books appropriate for reading aloud in the classroom or even during a themed storyhour. Especially useful are the engaging "Your Choice" sections, which pose questions such as "You like playing computer games indoors. You have a soccer computer game that is fun to play. Is that good exercise?" While each spread introduces a new topic (e.g. Healthy Food's "Eating Regular Meals," "Healthy Grains," and "Unhealthy Food"), solid introductions and conclusions make for cohesive packages. Each book begins with a general statement about the importance of the particular subject and ends with the reassurance that starting good habits will contribute to a healthy life. Recommended--Joanna Fabicon, Los Angeles Public Library School Library Journal November 2009-- "School Library Journal" This series for beginner readers demonstrates that good health and fitness are not just necessary, but also essential to maintaining a well balanced life. These titles touch on the importance of sustaining good habits through appropriate personal hygiene, good nutrition, exercise, and by practicing proper safety habits. The titles offer the reader scenarios concerning the topic "What would you do?" This prompts the reader to think about how they would act; advice on how the reader should handle the dilemma is forthcoming. This is an excellent series to own and teachers would be well advised to use this in lesson planning when teaching health and fitness. The illustrations and photos are colorful and contemporary and the text is large and suitable for beginner readers. Bibliography. Glossary. Websites. Recommended--Hope Marie Cook, Librarian and Head of Curriculum Center, Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic, Connecticut Library Media Connection January/February 2010-- "Library Media Connection" We have a major problem of childhood obesity in this country, so efforts to improve the health and fitness of children are welcome. One way is to present information on these areas in a bright, colorful text written at the level of first through third grader readers. The focus of this book is on the value of exercise, and it provides many suggestions for young readers about how to exercise. The editor describes the books in the Health and Fitness series in this fashion: "Each book educates the reader on the way foods fuel the body and the benefits of exercise, personal hygiene, and staying safe." The contents of the book are grouped into 13 chapters, a glossary, and suggestions for further research including websites and an index. The book contains color photos of children on every page; the children are both boys and girls and a variety of races/ethnic groups. In all the books in this series, the text is clear and accurate, with numerous short comments and questions. In this volume, for example, there is a comment that although computer games are fun they are really not a good way to exercise. This book provides young readers with readily accessible information that they can apply to their daily lives. It's the right size for small hands and very rugged in construction. It lends itself well to sharing with an adult as well. Recommended--Donald Logsdon Jr. NSTA9/24/2009-- "NSTA"
