About the Book

What is Post-Impressionism? Why did the Post-Impressionists avoid realistic colors? Did Post-Impressionism have an impact on later art styles? 'Post-Impressionism' answers all these questions. It also discusses how Post-Impressionism developed, examines the distinctive styles of individual Post-Impressionist artists, and looks at how the Post-Impressionists used color, shape, and composition to create paintings with a powerful visual and emotional impact. 'Art on the Wall' is an exciting and informative series that explores a range of art movements and styles. Each title in the series looks at the history behind the movement and discusses the techniques used by its artists. The text is supported with stunning paintings and other artworks that illustrate each art style. The titles also include biographies of well-known artists and try-it-yourself activities that encourage readers to create their works of art using the techniques of the movement.

Review :
Avoiding the common approach of focusing on specific artists as a framework, these titles succeed in presenting a bird's-eye view of each period without oversimplification. Information on individual artists is included in the broader context of the movement. Visually exciting, with plenty of color, layouts are hip and should appeal to the target audience. The texts can be choppy as the authors flit from one point to the next, but they cover a lot of ground. There is an emphasis on the Internet as a research tool. For example, it is suggested in Surrealism that any work of art mentioned, but not pictured, may be looked up on Google Image Search. While this is true of most pieces, it is not fail-proof. While similar titles may offer more depth, these books fill the gap between basic introductions and dry research texts.Recommended-Lisa Glasscock, Library Media Specialist, Columbine Public LibrarySchool Library JournalApril 2009-- "School Library Journal" Introduces Post-Impressionist art, highlighting the different types, and looks at the lives and works of representative artists. Extras include Index, additional resources to "Find Out More", Glossary, Timeline and short biographies of the major authors. Lots of color and examples of the art tupe. Simple format, but quick and easy for reference. Good for even our IB or advance art students. -Maryjane O'Halloran-Beane Arlington Independent School District 12/7/2009-- "Arlington Independent School District" Series: Art on the Wall. Each book discusses a method of art and the important artists that influenced and started each movement. Includes index, glossary, timelines, websites, and additional reading. Each book offers projects for young artists to try the style. Highly illustrated. This looks "young", but it is a quick introduction to an art movement perfect for ART I students. Could be used at all levels. Recommended--Maryjane O'Halloran-Beane, Library Media Specialist Arlington Independent School District2/20/2009-- "Arlington Independent School District" The six titles in the "Art on the Wall" (Heinemann Library, 2008; Gr 4-8) series cover distinct artistic movements from The Renaissance to Pop Art with primary emphasis on work of the (late) 19th and the 20th centuries. Each title includes visual examples by outstanding artists; clear, concise explanations; and concludes with related websites and time lines. Have students share these titles, then discuss their observations with their classmates as part of a pre-trip museum orientation. - Barbara Wysocki, Curriculum Connections--School Library Journal 11/2/2010-- "School Library Journal" This is an excellent resource for students of art and art history in middle and high school settings. Hopefully, rather than feeling frustrated that many pieces referred to are not included in the illustrations, students will research those paintings. Art teachers on all levels can use this to supplement lessons. The explanation of who is included, not only artists. But the numerous movements under the umbrella of post-impressionism is made clear. Teachers may challenge students with the "Try it yourself" suggestions. Or readers may challenge themselves. Recommended--Harriett Thurstlle, Librarian, Upper Darby Delaware County Library System1/28/09-- "Delaware County Library System" This series is amazing! Every time I turned to a new page, I was drawn into the volume a little deeper. Topics include descriptions of art within each movement; history and stories; global influence, and lives of the artists. Each discussion showcases color reproductions and uses the art to further define the techniques that were made manifest by the artists of each movement. Readers are challenged to notice techniques specific to each movement in the work of both famous and less-famous artists. Aside from the clear and concise writing and corollary knowledge gained, my favorite feature of this series is the random interjections of a "Try It Yourself" feature. For example, Jackson Pollock's unprimed, off-the-easel canvasses were the foundation of the expression of his genius. The Abstract Expressionism volume invites budding artists to create an intentional paint-dribble representation of an idea using simple materials found in any home or classroom. Volumes include biographies and continued-learning projects. Bibliography. Glossary. Timeline. Index. Highly Recommended.
