About the Book

He continues to dream John Mote, the author of Dodging Erasers as he recalls a time when his sixth grade teacher threw an eraser at him in order to interrupt his daydreaming, sees numerous times throughout his life when various events occurred which caused him to wonder whether he should stop dreaming. When WW2 broke out, John was in college, and, as an active member of a student group, and was in the process of going into the ministry. The U.S. involvement in the war had a strong impact on the group. He and one other member of the group decided to register as conscientious objectors. When his request for C.O. status was turned down, and he was asked to report for induction, he decided that, rather than go to prison, he would go into the service as a non-combatant. He continued to appeal for C.O status. From the time he entered the army, he found it to be a real struggle. When he befriended a black artist he met at a USO, his commanding officer ordered him to give up his relationship with the black artist, or be transferred. When this happened, he came to the conclusion that he could no longer remain in an organization that had such control over his life that it could tell him who could and who could not be his friends, and again applied for C.O. status. When the request was again turned down, he decided that he would refuse to do duty, was brought before a Section Eight Board, and was given a "Character Poor" discharge. After a year and a half in the army, he returned to college and went on to seminary. During the next 35 years, he served six different churches, in Washington and Baltimore. Most of these churches were inner city churches which were struggling to stay alive. John's dream was that he would be able to turn these churches around. Once again these dreams didn't come true.
