About the Book

Unlike traditional introductory math/stat textbooks, Probability and Statistics: The Science of Uncertainty brings a modern flavor to the course, incorporating the computer and offering an integrated approach to inference that includes the frequency approach and the Bayesian inference. From the start the book integrates simulations into its theoretical coverage, and emphasizes the use of computer-powered computation throughout. Math and science majors with just one year of calculus can use this text and experience a refreshing blend of applications and theory that goes beyond merely mastering the technicalities. The new edition includes a number of features designed to make the material more accessible and level-appropriate to the students taking this course today.

About the Author :
Michael Evans is a Professor of Statistics at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 1977 and has been employed there ever since with leaves spent at Stanford University and Carnegie Mellon University. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, was an Associate Editor of JASA Theory and Methods 1991-2005, was an Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Statistics 1999-2006, has been an Associate Editor of the journal Bayesian Analysis since 2005 and is a subject matter Editor for the online journal FACETS. He served as President of the Statistical Society of Canada 2013-2014. His research has been concerned with multivariate statistical methodology, computational statistics, and the foundations of statistics. A current focus of research is the development of a theory of inference based upon an explicit definition of how to measure statistical evidence and the development of tools to deal with criticisms of statistical methodology associated with their inherent subjectivity. He has authored, or coauthored, numerous research papers as well as the books Approximating Integrals via Monte Carlo and Deterministic Methods (with T. Swartz) published by Oxford in 2000, Probability and Statistics: The Science of Uncertainty (with J. Rosenthal) published by W.H. Freeman in 2004 and 2010 and Measuring Statistical Evidence Using Relative Belief published by CRC Press/ Chapman and Hall in 2015. Jeffrey Rosenthalis a Professor in the department of Statistics at the University of Toronto. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University at the age of 24. For his research, Rosenthal was awarded the2006 CRM-SCC Prize, and also the 2007 COPSS Presidents Award, the most prestigious honor bestowed by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies. For his teaching, he received a Harvard University Teaching Award in 1991, and an Arts and Science Outstanding Teaching Award at the University of Toronto in 1998. He was elected to Fellowship of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2005, and of the Royal Society of Canada in 2012, and was awarded the SCC Gold Medal in 2013. He is the author of Struck by Lightning: The Curious World of Probabilities, a trade book that was published in sixteen editions and ten languages. He s also published two textbooks about probability theory, and over ninety refereed research papers, many related to the field of Markov chain Monte Carlo randomized computer algorithms and to interdisciplinary applications of statistics."
