About the Book

Fortune's Favored: The Tragic Seduction of Wall Street's Willing is historical fiction at its heroic best told against a backdrop of Wall Street when the most outrageous illicit profits were made at the expense of trusting investors. The scope and scale of the corporate transgressions of the late 1990s exceeded anything the U.S. has witnessed since the years preceding the Great Depression. The collapse of Enron was the canary in the mineshaft. It was the biggest bankruptcy in the nation's history until it was eclipsed by WorldCom's some six months later. A number of very major highly regarded companies were using convoluted and often fraudulent accounting devices to brazenly inflate earnings, hide losses, and drive up stock prices. The roots of the problem lay not with the legendary "few bad apples" but rather with systemic and structural defects that required a Federal statutory remedy. Namely lack of auditor independence, ineffective regulatory oversight of accounts, lax standards of corporate governance and securities analyst's conflicts of interest. Canadian teenager comes to America at the tail end of the depression, finds work in Jackson, Mississippi as a trash collector, high school basketball coach, Bible salesman, and partnerships in the motel and long-distance telephone business to become one of the richest men in the world. Had Clayton Colburn died at sixty, he would have been one of the wealthiest men in the world, and left a legacy of unknown proportions. He created value and money just as readily as a banker does when he gives a nod to equity positions. He created millionaires from average working people and substantially improved the income levels of thousands of othersand for this; he received much love, respect, and accolades as his company expanded in its meteoric rise. However, he did not die when he was sixty. He continued and took the valiant blows of a fallen hero. There are very few who know him now and those that still do regard his fall as an American tragedy.
