About the Author :
Francis C. Dane received a BS in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a PhD in social psychology from the University of Kansas. His advisor was Larry Wrightsman, and he has certainly followed in Dr. Wrightsman's footsteps in terms of staying active in publishing and doing research. He started as assistant professor of psychology at State University of New York in Oswego, New York, from 1979 to 1983. He moved to Clemson University in South Carolina from 1983 to 1988, where he was promoted to associate professor of psychology, and then moved to Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, where he was associate professor and department chair of psychology. He stayed at Mercer as the William Heard Kilpatrick professor of psychology in the college of liberal arts and as professor of internal medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine until 2002. He then became the inaugural James V. Finkbeiner endowed chair of ethics and public policy in the college of arts and behavioral sciences at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan, until 2010, after which he accepted the position chair of arts and sciences at Jefferson College of Health Sciences in Roanoke, Virginia. When Jefferson College became part of Radford University in 2019 he became Professor of Psychology at Radford. Arlene Fink (PhD) is Professor of Medicine and Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles, and president of the Langley Research Institute. Her main interests include evaluation and survey research and the conduct of research literature reviews as well as the evaluation of their quality. Dr. Fink has conducted scores of evaluation studies in public health, medicine, and education. She is on the faculty of UCLA's Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and is a scientific and evaluation advisor to UCLA's Gambling Studies and IMPACT (Improving Access, Counseling & Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) programs. She consults nationally and internationally for agencies such as L'institut de Promotion del la Prévention Secondaire en Addictologie (IPPSA) in Paris, France, and Peninsula Health in Victoria, Australia. Professor Fink has taught and lectured extensively all over the world and is the author of more than 130 peer-reviewed articles and 15 textbooks.
John W. Creswell, PhD, is a Professor of Family Medicine and Senior Research Scientist of
the Michigan Mixed Methods Program. He has authored numerous articles and 34 books on
mixed methods research, qualitative research, and research design. While at the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, he held the Clifton Endowed Professor Chair, served as Director of the
Mixed Methods Research Office, co-founded SAGE's Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and
was an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and a consultant to
the Veterans Administration Health Services Research Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was
a Senior Fulbright Scholar to South Africa in 2008 and to Thailand in 2012. In 2011, he co-led
a National Institutes of Health working group on the "best practices of mixed methods research
in the health sciences," served as a Visiting Professor at Harvard's School of Public Health and
received an honorary doctorate from the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In 2014, he was
the founding President of the Mixed Methods International Research Association. In 2015, he
joined the staff of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan to Co-Direct the Michigan
Mixed Methods Program. In 2017, he coauthored the American Psychological Association
"standards" on qualitative and mixed methods research. The fourth edition of this book on
Qualitative Inquiry & Research Design won the 2018 McGuffey Longevity Award from the U.S.
Textbook & Academic Authors Association. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he gave virtual
keynote presentations to many countries from his office in Osaka, Japan. Updates on his work
